HAMMOND’S HOME SECURITY PROGRAM
In partnership with the Hammond Police Department and Hammond Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr., Hammond homeowners can upgrade their home security and save money with this city-wide program. The Home Security Program is available for all owner-occupied single family residences on a first come/first served basis as long as funds are available. The program profides a reimbursement of 50% of the cost of making recommended security improvements up to $200.00.
Eligible Security Items include the installation of Dead Bolt Locks, Security Locks, Motion Detectors, a Steel Door, Replacement Door Frame and/or Strike Plate, Peephole, Window Pins, Alarm System (PURCHASE/INSTALLATION - NOT LEASE), and more! Just ask your Community Police Officer.
Here’s how the Hammond Home Security Program works:
1. Contact the Hammond Police Department at 852-2909.
2. Your neighborhood Community Police Officer makes a security check of your home. This Security Check must be done BEFORE the actual work is started to be eligible for this program.
3. The Community Police Officer provides a signed checklist, noting the date, and his recommendations.
4. The homeowner makes the necessary improvements. ALL original receipts must be SAVED for reimbursement.
5. Homeowner notifies the Hammond Police Department that the Security Upgrade is complete.
6. An officer from the Hammond Police Department makes the 2nd inspection and varifies that the improvements have corrected deficiencies noted in the intial report, and collects original receipts for reimbursement.
7. The Community Police Unit will process the form and receipts.
8. Homeowners will be issued a check for ONE-HALF the cost - up to $200.00.
This offer is available on a ONE TIME per household basis. Before you purchase your Home Security Equipment or system, be sure you know what all the cost are, such as: Equipment & Hardware, Installation, Maintenance or Monthly Service Fees, and other costs. Again, Security Systems must be purchased and NOT leased.

LIGHT UP YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS
It’s often been said that “bad things happen in dark places”. Those individuals who de-face neighborhood buildings, schools, garages, fences, etc…don’t want to be seen for fear of being caught. Going one step further, burglars who break in and steal items of sentimental value, things that you’ve worked for years to have - a new car, house, jewelry, fishing and hunting equipment, etc…- usually do so by using darkness and dimly-lit surroundings to their advantage.
In addition to Hammond’s Home Security Program, residents and business owners (WHO QUALIFY) can get a “FREE” Security Light. These security lights turn “on” at dusk and “off” at dawn. Offered through the Urban Enterprise Association (UEA), the purpose of these lights is to brighten a residence or business of the Urban Enterprise Zone and the City of Hammond. The property owner and/or tenant must maintain and pay the operating costs of the individual security light once installed on private property. These lights are professionally installed by a contracted and certified electrician. Acting as an agent of the UEA, this electrician will be the only one allowed (FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES) to install the light(s). Only one (1) security light per household (building), and two (2) security lights per business, may be installed. If you request more than one light, you will pay for the light and installation independently.
These lights are an easy and affordable way to help prevent crime in your neighborhood or business. Although there is no guarantee, you can suggest where you would like the light to be placed to the contacted and certified electrician - Front, Rear, Left Side, or Right Side of the building.
For more information on how you can take advantage of this Safety Security Light, contact Angela Perez-Arriaga at 853-6512. Applications are available at the Urban Enterprise Association located at 649 Conkey Street in Hammond. No applications are accepted after November 1st of every year. The program resumes taking applications March 1st the following year.
The homeowner or business owner fills out a short form/agreement available at the Urban Enterprise Association located at 649 Conkey Street in Hammond.
